Biography Welcome to money diaries, where we aim to tackle the eternal taboo that is money. We ask real subscribers what they spend their own money on for seven days, and track literally every last dollar. Have you ever felt... Humiliated by the "work image" you display? Whether it's fawning over your superiors, agonizing over the banal choice of words on your resume or more, tell viewers about your experience here. Today: a software engineer who makes $162,000 a year - and spends some of his own money on yarn. Editor's note: any rates are fixed in american bucks. Work occupation: software engineersector: techage: 26location: austin, txsalary: $162,000net worth: ~$5-8 million (~$75,000 in savings, ~$400,000 set aside for taxes(?!?!!?), $900,000 in investments (mutual fund etf), $110,000 in 401(k)s, $1.9m in vested company stock, $1.6m in non-vested company stock (lion's share will be vested next year). I started working at a startup four years ago, and we moved to ipo this year, which brought this net worth to mind. Before the ipo, i had ~$450,000 in net worth between savings and stocks. I was able to sell some of my shares immediately, after the ipo (hence the savings on taxes, i don't know exactly how much i'll owe) and will be able to sell the vested shares - if i want to), in a reasonable few months. No car/home/debt.)Debt: $0wage amount (twice in one month): $3,548.26pronouns: she/she Monthly expensesrent: $1,350 for a two-bed/one-bath house split with my boyfriendespp: $1,620401(k): $1,350pet insurance: $25utilities: $90 (electric/gas/water, my spouse)internet: $30slinging: $35netflix: $0 (house split)hulu: $5.99 (combined with family)cell phone: $34 (i pay my parents for the account) Were users expected to receive wo? Have you participated in some form of "tower"? If so, equally how did you pay for it? Yes, both my parents are high school teachers, so education has always remained important in my family. I wouldn't say i was pressured to enroll garden, school, it was just expected of me. I graduated from a private university that offered generous financial aid. My parents contributed ~75% of the remaining money, and i paid for the rest with a scholarship, summer internships, and a part-time office during the school year. I was very lucky to graduate without funds, and i'm aware of anything that helped me create savings much sooner than usual. As a kid, what conversations did you have about finances? Did your parents/guardians talk to you about finances? My older family members often talked to us about finances (not touching on their specific circumstances, but really giving general advice). My mom is a math teacher, so she would talk to me about all things compound interest (when investing) or how bad it is if you have debt with an incredibly high interest rate. When i was just out of college, my mom helped me put together funds and talked to me about the role of creating a savings account for emergencies. I'm not a master investor (i'm aware of those who are into trading and stock strategies, while i only use mutual funds), but, through conversations with friends, i've realized that my parents taught me a lot about the funds market, and their advice on regulations and state laws was widely helpful. What was your first job and why did you get it?" i was 16 years old and working at a state park nearby laying trails, building fences, and so on. At the time i thought i wanted to be a park ranger, so i needed experience. My parents also wanted me to earn money (not hard to know the value of a dollar), so they made me save half of what i earned, and i spent the rest on teenage trivia. Did you worry about earning money when you were young? No; both my parents had stable jobs and handled the amounts well, so i wasn't worried yet. I'd say our organization belonged to the middle class (that's probably what everyone claims, ha ha), wanting to help i never worried about the basics and any summer we went surfing. Are you worried about money now? No, not too much.My goal in saying this is to say it as minimally intrusive as possible, but now having discovered that i have a huge fortune, product video austin i'm a little depressed. I don't know anyone who is truly "rich" who will be able to give me a recommendation on finding an accountant or managing a fortune. But in everyday life i am very fortunate that i don't have to worry about money. At what age did you become financially responsible for yourself and do you have financial protections in the usual quarters?"22 years old when i graduated from college. My parents or boyfriend were there for me if, something went wrong. Do you receive or have you received passive or inherited income on multiple occasions? If so, please explain. yes; i received ~$8,000 from my grandmother when she died when i was in my twenties, which i used for university classes. Day one 8am - monday morning! I've been working from home since the pandemic, and i'm impressed that i can sleep an extra hour and snuggle with the dog. This is where i got out of bed and just spent an hour reading and drinking coffee with ice cubes while my brain connected online. Most of my team is on the west coast, which means they're 2 hours behind me. I use the weekends from 9 to 11 to do the hardest work that requires focus, attention, because a large portion of my day is split between meetings. In 2016, i became my team leader, which means less clean coding events and more talking. 12pm - i break for lunch and make three eggs with spinach and a piece of toast. It shows to me, i could eat breakfast every time, and fold happy because of it. My boyfriend, d. Runs to the grocery store since we didn't have that place on the weekend, and i walk the dog. He recently quit his job (also a software engineer) and went freelance, accordingly his schedule is more flexible than mine. He bought sourdough starter, avocados, strawberries, clementines, pistachios, tate's cookies, chicken breasts, broccoli, dry mashed potatoes, cheez-its, and pizza ingredients. 44.08 $ 5 pm - the second half of the day goes by very quickly. I have a few bid meetings, which go appropriately, and then start writing proposals for my team's 2022 plan. The last briefing of the day is on a controversial function and a senior leader just derails the discussion. Ah, to be a mediocre person and reason absolutely anything you want and let people listen.I end up getting really pissed off and the person and the product operator have another years discussion on how to get around this guy. 7 hours time after the social i head to our separate garage and do a hiit workout using the caroline girvan method. There was quite a bit of kicking today, which is unsophisticatedly perfect: i just visualize my work opponents and crush them! Afterward, i join a zoom call with my parents and sisters to solve our weekly... Crossword puzzle! I know, very cool. We do evan birnholz's weekly sunday crossword puzzle as a whole group - since you want crossword puzzles, be sure to check it out, his topics are awesome! My boyfriend beyond that hasn't caught on to our enthusiasm for crosswords, but i give him a shout out for all the video game related clues. After solving the crossword, we recognize how great a week anyone had and spend the usual 30 minutes saying goodbye to each other. 9 hours after the call, i consumed a little bit of protein oatmeal with strawberries and peanut butter (i've told you about this before, how i eat breakfast). I scrolled through reddit and decided to make a crochet bag similar to a sunflower.Instead of using yarn in the colors i already have, i of course buy a bunch of yarn from michael's online store to be delivered to me tomorrow. I chill on the bed, watch bob's burgers until 11 o'clock, and end the evening. $23.76 Total for the day: $67.84 Day two 8 a.M. - Hello, world! I'm feeling my brand of suspiciously chipper this morning, though it doesn't change my routine in the slightest. I briefly cuddle with the dog, brush my teeth, slather on sunscreen, and then read in my chair until 9. Despite the fact that no one is on the world wide web and i don't have a strict schedule, i like to start as close to 9 as possible, due to the fact that helping is a slippery slope for me - suddenly taking the first step at 11 (the start of the pandemic was a bit of a mess at first). 12pm - i break for lunch and decide to order some halal bros for d. And i. I get the chicken shawarma and d. Gets the chicken wrap, undoubtedly with extra white and red sauce (fellow austinites, i hope you adore it as much as i do). Tuesday is my meeting day, and i tend to have meetings going one after the alternative from 1 to 6, hence our company with d. Going for a quick walk before i disappear into zoom hell. 1/23/01 6pm - done! I have a million things to do with all these meetings, but they can wait until tomorrow. I make sure any movies i've recorded for the future and head to the garage for a workout. Because when you have dumbbells and a patient in need of motivation, i can't help but recommend caroline girvan. People, i can do push-ups now, the intended is a miracle!!! 8pm - i eat dinner with leftover halal bros and start knitting a bag of sunflowers (the yarn arrived this afternoon). The pattern turned out to be more accessible than i thought, and there are eight tails of yarn to weave into each little sunflower square, which is my least favorite row of creation. I make three squares and weave in zero ends. I plan to weave them all in when completed; i just put off the pain until later, always we are settled in our family. 10pm - d. And i decide to go in for a nighttime walk with the dog. We talk about finances and possibly buying a building next year. It occurs to me that my partner is the only one i can talk to honestly about how i feel about my personal new financial situation. It's hard to talk about it even with my parents, who have spent enough time teaching, and now i suddenly have more money than they do. Pretty fucked up in a way. Day total: $23.01 Day three 8 a.M. - [Insert morning routine.] Before i get to work, i research information about nonprofit companies that help fight the abortion bill in the state of texas. I donate 500 greenbacks each to three different organizations. 1500 dollars 1pm - after a lunch of avocado toast and fruit, i get back to work. Wednesday is a 24-hour day with no meetings, which means under the current circumstances i have .... Wait for it... Meetings. Ugh. After synchronizing with my coworker on some issues that originated on monday, i have a check in with an engineering candidate. I used to think interviewing was fun, however, after doing too many of them, i hated it. I also hate that when i have a part of people to my liking, and i think his application will do well (like today), there is no certainty that he will get an offer.Bottom line: it leads to depression. 5 pm - directly in i finish on time to make it to practice before attending softball with d. We play on an amateur softball team (lowest league, baby!), And this is our first game of the season. I haven't played in two years due to covid and in no way played a bat and ball sport as a kid, so i'm a little nervous. My goal for today is to catch at least one ball. Wish me the best of luck! 9pm - i didn't catch a single one :( although, in my own defense, not a single ball came near me. Admittedly, i threw the ball twice, so whether i'm aware of it or not, success. We lost by a wide margin and this incident is of little concern to anyone, which is why i love this league and this kind of team. After that we go for a drink at a brewpub. B. And i have a beer each, eat some group supplements and i wire money to those who paid $25 for both of us. We get home and go to bed pretty early. $25 Total for the day: $1,525 Day four 8am - coffee, cuddle with the dog, read, work. At the end of the week, i've been feeling like i'm losing concentration all century, and i'm at a great stage of working on a book, so i'm not having a very productive morning. 3pm, our company and d. Walk the dog and stop by the local market to pick up a bottle of wine. We get together with friends for weekly pizza, and traditionally they deliver wine, but the basic rule of thumb is to grab some just in case. It's never a good idea to have a little extra! I'm aware of this, and it shouldn't be one, but it physically hurts me when i don't buy the cheapest wine. For example, i have to squat in the wine department for at least five minutes contemplating the event whether it's rude to serve guests a $3 hectar. Like a true wine snob, i decide not to go beyond ten bucks and base my preference solely on the awesomeness of the label. $12.86 7pm - finished work, finished working out, time for pizza! Three of our friends come over (they brought wine, but we're definitely ready) and our staff pulls out the ooni pizza oven. I bought it for d. For his birthday, right around the time my organization went ipo and i was feeling cool. D. Made homemade dough and sauce yesterday, and to top it all off, it provides several types of cheese and meat for toppings. 2am - the night goes much longer than i thought it would. The five of us eat six pizzas (they're small and drink a lot of wine. Someone puts on invisible man and you're all the way to the finish line unable to break away from the suspense. Two of the guests, having been ubered, leave, and the third decides to crash on our couch, because it's late and they've already had a drink. D. And i, stumbling, go to bed, and i try to pretend that tomorrow i won't have to: to work. Total of the day: $12.86 Day five 9 a.M. - I couldn't get up at 8. Thank goodness there's a two-hour buffer in the time difference and that no one is particularly functional on fridays. In the morning i make a double chai and get to work. The end of the quarter is approaching, exactly what that means is a lot of planning for the upcoming quarter, writing reviews for people and just general panic at which point people assume the end is near and their function won't actually become shipped in our quarter. 2pm - i've been so unfocused that i decide to head to a local coffee shop to walk around and replace the ambiance. I buy a chai latte and pretend that the hipster vibe is contributing to my productivity. It's not, but the people-watching was top-notch, so at least everything didn't exist as a waste of time. $4.36 6:30 p.M. - Fuck, i usually like to finish early on fridays, but that's what i got for drinking at my leisure yesterday and trying to be a hipster coder this afternoon. I finish the last piece of code and unplug for the weekend. I take d.'S car and dishes to my own friend's house for friday's bachelor session. 9:30pm - our site with 2 of my friends spend the evening relaxing on the couch, "watching" the bachelor on welfare and discussing our weeks. We end up deciding to buy tickets to an art show my friend heard about ($21.52). It's my favorite way to end the week - i'm too tired to do anything crazy, but a stretch of time spent with my girlfriend is so scrambly. I moved to austin in part because my boyfriend is from austin as a result and he has tons of friends here, which is usually guys (who are great). But said two girlfriends make my heart so happy and i heart listening to their crazy dating stories and complaining to the office. I get home and go to bed pretty early, still tired after last night. $21.52 Total for the day: $25.88 Day six 9am - i get an extra hour of sleep before i decide to start the weekend. I don't know if you're wondering, and with that, my dog has an automatic feeder and a doggy door, so, my morning routine with her has been reduced to only the most necessary part - cuddling. I order breakfast tacos for our company with d. While he makes tea and we suggest what to do today. $18.76 10:30am - we head to greenbelt for a longer, more interesting walk with the dog than usual. I'm impressed that austin has this kind of place that makes you feel like you have space in a metropolis. I grew up in a rural area, so it's my heart to be outdoors, especially when it's not so humid for once. 1pm - on the way home i wanted candy. It's weird, normally i'd want chocolate, but in the new century i'd kill for mike and ikes. We stop at a gas station so i can indulge my own powers and d. Puts gas in the car. I pay for the gas - it's his car, but i use it a lot, and since he pays for the insurance in full, i pay for the fuel. $45.78 4:00 p.M. After we got home and got some rest, i decided to tackle a diy project that i've been putting off forever. I bought this tv cabinet on craigslist, which is successful except that it's painted red, white, and blue, and that's already a great deal for a cabinet. I bought a sander and sandpaper at home depot and decided that watching personal improvement shows was one hundred percent worth it. $63.45 6pm - i probably should have looked for recommendations on leveling, since the wood got a little scratched during my procedure. In addition to, heck, it takes forever. I sanded all the red parts and now any looks cool just the wood, blue and fair colors. It matches the rest of the decor, and i decided it was even better than sanding the whole thing. It's unequivocally not since i'm not interested in sanding everything. 7pm - d. And i go out to dinner at an italian place that's placed a variety of minutes away. We split an appetizer, each got a pasta dish, split a dessert, and both had a glass of wine. It's finally getting a little cooler in texas, and the weather on this night is just perfect! We split the bill equally. When the problem comes to splitting expenses, we simply split the ?Gross? Little things (restaurant bills, groceries, etc.) And for the small stuff we just assume things will finally even out. $41.50 Total for the day: $169.49 Day seven 11am - after a lazy morning spent watching tv and eating oatmeal, i head to my adult league soccer game. I'm real close to playing soccer (as opposed to softball), so this league is a little higher competition. The site has a great game and we came in 1st place! Soccer is the only way i can catch a high from running, so how nice that i can start my sunday afternoons this way.One way i watch a kid's soccer game and shudder at the flood of memories of overzealous parents. 3pm - it's my turn to follow to the grocery store. I don't know about texans, but heb scares me. Can there not be enough people there? I survive and leave with bread, oatmeal, lots of fruit, carrots, string beans, broccoli, avocado, quinoa, peas, chicken breasts, bacon, spaghetti, snacks, ice cream, and other random things. At the beginning of the pandemic, we were much more creative with our meals, but in 2016, it appears to me that visitors are eating the same seven meals one at a time." $60.32 7pm - i spend the second half of the day cleaning with d. And listening to an audiobook while crocheting. At 7 time i have another family zoom call, at this point with extended family (grandfather, parents, sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins and sadly no crossword puzzle. This is a tradition we started during the covid period and one that i hope can live on for many years to come, as i am unlikely to remember otherwise what is going on in the lives of my distant relatives. Because of these calls, my grandfather has become the perfect technical genius among his supporters and almost quite often he talks about how he customized a particular webcam. As a techie, i'm very proud of that. 10pm - our site with d. Cooking up some spaghetti carbonara and broccoli, and i check my calendar - for next week. Checking to see if my to-do lists are in an organized order. I used to be mighty stressed out on sundays, but which i write everything down, oddly enough, helps me relax. We end up playing monopoly, the winner of which gets a back massage. Continuation follows, because who is capable of finishing monopoly in one night...
